Goon - Movie Review

Doug Glatt is the underwhelming outcast in a family of intellects and believes the only thing he is good for is fighting. A scuffle with a hockey player at a local hockey game proves fortunate for Doug (Sean William Scott) when he’s asked to join the team and be their enforcer, fatefully setting Doug on a collision course with the all-time nastiest combatant in hockey – Ross Rhea (Liev Schreiber).

Jay Baruchel plays Doug’s best friend, the foulmouthed, hockey-lusting Ryan. Baruchel also co-wrote with his chum Evan Goldberg and was a producer. They and director Michael Dowse (Take Me Home Tonight) scored majorly with Goon. A hockey film made and quite possibly masturbated to by hockey lovers for hockey lovers.

I loved it.

A perfect cast – Alison Pill (Scott Pilgrim) makes me adore her even more as the bittersweet, sailor-mouthed Eva. The team is insane; Sean William Scott plays the unfiltered adorable, loveable, huggable meathead version of his usual meathead roles. Kim Coates (Sons of Anarchy) is the intense lunatic of a head coach Ronnie Hortense. Live Schreiber (A Walk on the Moon, if you love Liev you will watch) doesn’t make any major screen time until the latter part of the movie, but you know he owns it all.

Just before the movie feels like it’s getting too silly it evens itself out without ever missing a beat. A vast majority of reviews say this film is the “greatest hockey movie since Slapshot.” They’re right, but Goon conpletely stands on its own.
